IWSG Encouragement

Wednesday, December 2, 2015

Today is IWSG post day, where writers everywhere release their fears and encourage others to keep moving forward on their journey.

Remember to hop around and visit as many persons from the Insecure Writers Support Group, as possible.

In November, I had two releases—one from a boxed set and the other, a book previously held by a publisher.

Blurb: A near accident brings Toni and her daughter a homeless dog and a man she’d prefer to keep in her past. You can find details on this novella here and the price is good at $0.99.

And, this romantic suspense novel is at $0.99 for a limited time on Amazon.
Blurb: A businessman. A paralegal. A case of attraction. Will she stand by him when he's accused of murder?

Despite all the challenges, I appreciate my learning experiences and if there's anything I want to share this month, it's this:-

Have a brilliant day, doing what you love and loving what you're doing!

Sampling Hardware on a Sunday

Sunday, November 15, 2015

Hardware was first published in 2009. Rights have reverted and the book will make its way into the world again on November 20. Look out for it! http://amzn.to/1NB8eYJ

EXCERPT

Quinn watched her, with his chin propped on his fingers. A hint of a smile crossed his lips.

“You didn’t see or hear anything, did you?”

No response came to mind.

“S’all right,” he said, “whatever’s bothering you must be big.”

Yeah, you can say that again.

Pulling together her scattered wits, she came up with something to save face. “Um, I’m sorry. This is really unfair to you.”

“It’s okay. Care to share the problem?” His eyebrows arched to enquiring peaks. “It’s gotta be something significant for you to sit through a play an hour and fifteen minutes long and not absorb anything.”

She looked at him with new eyes. He had more smarts than he let on. So much for thinking he wasn’t all that aware of her squirming next to him.

They stood, and he took her elbow. Her skin prickled, reinforcing the fact that every minute spent with him proved she shouldn’t be in his company.

In the car, she let her limbs loosen while he moved to the driver’s side. She'd go home and think about how she made a total idiot of herself. Her mind fast-forwarded to Monday and she prayed Mr. Wright would send the contract back early in the day, duly signed, which would mean the end of any interaction with the disturbing man by her side.

He put the car in gear and drove off. “I’m starving,” he said, “I hope you don’t mind if we stop for something to eat.”

Camille yawned. “Sorry, I’m tired. Maybe next time.”

He pressed his lips together and flicked her with his eyes. “Fine, I’ll take you home.”

She hadn’t fooled him. Guilt made her turn to study the shadows whipping past the window and she sighed inside, counting down the minutes until they said goodbye.

In the apartment parking lot, he switched off the engine, eased the door open, and faced her under the light. “You know, life is a lot more fun if you relax.”

“Why d’you think I’m not relaxed?” She stared at him, maintaining a comfortable pose. “If I’m tense, you might be at fault. That’s why we shouldn’t go out again.”

“That’s just sexual tension. You’re not prepared to go where this is leading. You want to control everything and sometimes, that’s just not possible.”

“Are you calling me a controlling tight-ass?”

“I didn’t say that.”

“But that’s what you meant.” She squared her shoulders and met his gaze. “Remember I told you I liked safe?”

He nodded.

"Well, you’re not it. You scream upheaval and sex.”

His eyebrows rose, but his gaze was impassive.

She sank back and folded her arms. “And I’m not having any of that.”

“Upheaval or sex?”

Camille ensured her expression said everything. “I don’t do fast and loose either.”

Quinn laughed, a sound that tickled her insides.

“You know, for someone who’s smooth and controlled on the outside, you have a rich and vivid imagination.”

Camille was nonplussed, but maintained an air of calm.

“A man like you expects certain things from a woman.”

The amusement in his eyes faded. “You don’t know me. Stop judging me.”

Heat crept up her neck and she felt firmly put in her place.

He opened the dashboard, and removed a business card holder. At the dull gleam of a handgun, Camille peered at him. Then, she pointed to it. “What d’you need that for?”

“I run a business. I need it for protection.”

“It won’t be much help in there. Besides, it’s careless to leave it lying around like that.”

“What would you have thought if I’d taken you out toting a gun?”

She bit her lip. “You have a point. But still, you should be more careful with it.”

“Agreed, ma’am.”

He maintained a straight face, but Camille suspected he was indulging her.

“I think we should start over.” He handed her a business card, but kept hold of her fingers.

“Here are my numbers. I’ll try not to think of you as a controlling tight-ass, if you agree to withhold judgment on my character until you know me better.”

The Listing Fest & Hardware!

Monday, October 26, 2015

Bish Denham is celebrating eight years of blogging and she's doing so with the Listing Bloghop. Congrats, Bish! This blog hop is one of the easiest ever.

The rules are:
  • Sign up, grab the banner and make a list.
  • Keep your list to between 5 and 25 items. You can list whatever you feel like (except for adult type content.)

My list has to do with the books I'll be working on for the next six or so months, in terms of writing, editing and formatting. Some of these are sweet romances and the others are romantic suspense.

The Vet's Christmas Pet
Daddy's Dilemma
The Vet's Valentine Gift
Cupid's Gift
Persuasion
Tender
Kingston Heat

The list of participants in this blogfest is here. What's on your list?

On another note, my next release is Hardware, which is up for pre-order on Amazon. Hardware is back with me after a stint with a publisher, so it's being spruced up and will be back on the market come November 20. Early birds get the special price!

Hardware & A Hive of Activity with CKP

Monday, October 12, 2015

Every time I get super-busy, my blog is the first thing that suffers. However, it's been a hive of activity lately because of the latest book I've written, which is a novella that is included in the Christmas Pets & Kisses boxed set, with 15 other fabulous writers.

The set has done extremely well, hitting three number 1 spots on Amazon and topping out at #51 in the top 100. My Amazon author rating had a meteoric rise, which is levelling off.
It has been an exciting time and proves once again that hard work does pay off. This has been another learning experience that I couldn't have benefitted from any other way that being in the middle of the action with a fabulous group of authors.

Just in case you missed my plenteous promos for the Christmas Pets & Kisses boxed set, you can pick up your copy on Amazon. It's only $0.99 which is a sweet deal.

I'm also working on the re-release of Hardware and have a Thunderclap Campaign going on, so would appreciate any spare clicks you may have that can assist me on Facebook, Twitter or Tumblr. Once you support, that's it, the rest of the process is automated. I appreciate all your help! Click on the link above or at the top right side of this page. Thanks!

What have you been up to lately? Working on a new novel? Planning on entering the IWSG Anthology Contest? Do share what you're doing.

Hardware - Sunday Sample

Sunday, September 13, 2015

Meet Quinn & Camille.

A delightful aroma filtered through the office. It jarred some distant memory to life, but the recollection remained just out of reach. Her song dried up in her throat when she realized the source of the scent stood by Roderick’s door, trying to get an eyeful of the space between her thighs. An alien coil of heat stroked her center and traveled down her legs. Subtly, she eased her thighs together wondering if that man had heat vision.

The potted palms on either side of the doorway provided a pleasing backdrop for his football-player physique. The image of a lithe panther slinked into her brain.

Every item he wore screamed money—from the tasseled loafers to  the  designer  jeans  encasing  long  legs,  and  the crisp, white shirt with the discreetly placed logo. A sculpted naked woman hung from the gold chain resting against his milk-chocolate skin.

He moved, and Roderick emerged behind him. The pair walked to the entrance, where she stared at him over Roderick’s shoulder, fascinated by his sharply etched lips. She clenched her fist, but it didn’t stem the desire to run her fingertips over his mouth.

His words came out low and mellow, not at all what she expected. Though he spoke to Roderick, she understood his words were meant for her. I’ll be seeing you.

She kept her face impassive, but her mind filled with questions. How did Roderick know him, and what kind of a name was Quincy?

The visitor caught her eye and paired his smile with a cheeky wink.

Camille answered her own question. One that shouts ghetto.

He was probably a drug don, straight from some shantytown in the capital city.  All the same, she stared at the door long   after  it  closed wondering where she had seen   him before. Something about him bothered her, stirring a familiar fear.

When Having a Pen Name Sucks

Thursday, August 22, 2013

I'll start by saying that I didn't think the matter of a pen name through thoroughly enough. One reason I decided to use one was that I received three publishing contracts in a short time frame—two books with one publisher and one with another.

I thought it would be better not to have the books competing since they were with different publishers—talk about warped reasoning—and secondly I had a really nosy character in my life at the time that I didn't want to even get a whiff of what I was doing.

More warped reasoning, I know.

Romancing the Blog & An Awesome Announcement!

Friday, August 31, 2012

Today, I'm part of the Romancing the Blog Hop, but I'm also chatting with Michael Offutt who's hosting me on the Friendship-is-ForeverTour.

We’ll be talking about societal norms and narrow-mindedness. Come on over, there's an AWESOME announcement to do with Distraction! Yep, it's the book over there in the sidebar.

Facebook: What Value to Authors?

Monday, June 25, 2012

Source
Among the things I did this past week was some research on social media and marketing. You’d think I’d have covered a lot of ground in this area already. I have, but I’m learning new things all the time.

If you’ve been dropping in for a bit, you’ll know that Facebook is one of the options I’ve been looking at for advertising. I’ve been holding back because I placed an ad on a review site and wanted to be able to track how that’s doing before I run ahead and do anything else.

The Publisher's Final Edit

Monday, March 5, 2012

I think I’ve gotten somewhat used to running behind on all things writerly.  I’m almost ready to convert Distraction to PDF format for the final read, but first there are a couple of other books I have to read and/or review.

I was in the middle of reading Hardware, another novel of mine written under a pen name, but had to stop ‘cause I suddenly remembered that I hadn’t finished a book for review that’s due on this blog tomorrow as part of a tour. Yikes! Of course, it pleased me that at just about 60% of the way, the book went from a canter to a gallop, which means I’ll finish reading it later today.

Getting-to-Know-You Blogfest & Winners Announced

Monday, November 14, 2011

Time really does fly when I’m having fun! This week the Romantic Suspense group (#43) in the recently concluded Rachael Harrie’s Platform  Building Campaign is hosting a Getting-to-Know-You Blogfest. Since some of us are doing NaNo, we’re giving ourselves a week to drop by each others blogs and cement the connections we’ve made during this Campaign. Without any more chit-chatting, here are my answers as to why I write what I do.

NaNoing? Meeting Goals? Spinning Wheels?

Wednesday, November 9, 2011

Hello to my blogging buddies, plus the crazy adventurous folks who are also doing NaNo.

NaNo has worked well for me as I’ve got three novels out of it so far that are among my best, with some addition and editing, of course. This year, I took a short story that was shortlisted in the 2009 Small Axe Literary Competition and decided to write a novel based on that. Not sure how to categorize it though, as the narrator is a thirty-odd year old woman looking back at her childhood, in which her father discards the family. I take the reader from the time Georgia is eight years old up to adulthood.

Novel Release & Celebration Giveaway

Tuesday, November 1, 2011

I don’t normally post on a Tuesday, except when something special’s happening. I feel like a bad writer person because I haven’t created a lot of fanfare over the release of my latest novel Hardware. Consider this as me blowing my own trumpet, broken fragments and all.   Maybe a symbol of me breaking into the market in a big way?...Nothing is impossible, right?

Hardware is my fourth release and it’s very close to my heart because my tight-ass main female character resembles me a whole lot personality wise. This book also took me on some strange adventures, but to get back on point, Marci Baun of Wild Child Publishing has been a dream to work with, as well as James Kellogg, the superb editor who was assigned to me.

Promo Monday

Sexy Frog in Snapshots of Jamaica

Friday, October 21, 2011

You remember that ad with a half-frog I posted two days ago, right? I thought it was a bit of eye-catching advertisement and wanted to capture it. Well, I didn’t get another good shot at it, so I cheated and went to the company’s Facebookpage and stole borrowed the total image. I also thought the second one was too cool and it was the one that caught my attention first. This morning, I got the 'You know you want me.' shot.  People might have been wondering what the heck I was doing.

Anyway, I think this is a cool  and innovative approach advertising by iprintdigital. That flirty little frog made me go out of my way to see what product she was advertising. It really works, 'cause I'm definitely not a fan of frogs or anything with more than two feet that travels close to the ground. Enjoy!

I’m also including the book trailer for my upcoming novel, Hardware. Have a peek – please, pretty please - if only for the irie reggae beat?

On my trip around the blogosphere this week, I’ve seen some interesting books and short stories up for release soon. On Monday, I want to do a post highlighting all the good stuff that’s being published in the next few months. If you have something that’s being released shortly and need a little plug, or if it's out and could use a mention, shoot me an email at jmwordsmith at gmail dot com.

Have a great weekend and meet some writing goals!

Dee Savoy, Camy Tang…People & Ideas to Watch

Wednesday, August 3, 2011

I didn’t get much done this past week on the self-publishing project. I still need to run a final edit on that first story I want to offer for free on Smashwords and I also did a couple of covers. I’m taking your ideas and combining them into one cover. Still working on that.

I did get my usual reading done. There are a few people I stalk follow, who have posted interesting articles on self-publishing that are worth sharing. See posts by award winning author Dee Savoy, and innovative thinker and writer Camy Tang.  I also checked out Beth Elisa Harris’ post on writers supporting each other, instead of doing the opposite and thought it interesting brain food.

Working Those Scenes

Monday, August 1, 2011

I haven’t been reading any ‘how-to’ articles lately, but usually I try to refresh myself on the aspect of writing I plan to tackle.  I’m now in the second round of edits on Hardware, a Romantic Suspense novel. The editor is good – read that as brutal - and he’s taken out more stuff this time. I gotta admit that the excised material can should go, but it’s the sentiment attached to those phrases and sentences that are giving me a bit of a niggle.  In other words, it’s crunch time and all the chaff has gotta go – whether I like it or not.

Writers know how easy it is to get stuck on bits of data we feel our stories can’t live without.  However, I know that taking out the sentences and paragraphs I feel are wonderfully written often lightens the prose, which makes for a better read.

Peeling Away the Layers aka Editing

Sunday, July 24, 2011

Two Saturdays ago, I went to the market for the first time in more than a year. The sights and sounds were almost overwhelming.  Eye-catching displays of vegetables and ground provision stretched in every direction. I saw everything from creamy-hued broad beans and turnips to flame coloured carrots and tomatoes.  People milled around buying, selling and hawking goods.

Then there were the heaps of refuse. Cabbage and lettuce leaves rested in piles, stripped down to display fresher insides. Dried banana leaves, pressed into service as protective layers between delicate fruits, lay cast aside. The precious cargo had arrived safely at market and were now displayed on stalls, in baskets and boxes.

Character Arc: Bubbling in the Background

Monday, June 6, 2011

I got my next-book-in-line-for-publication back after the first edit.  Mostly, I’ve been accepting changes and there are a few sections I need to rework so that they happen in real time, instead of how I originally penned them.

What fascinated me in reading through this novel is the character arc.  If I didn’t know what that was before, I certainly know now.

The Library...the Kindle...the Giveaways

Monday, May 30, 2011

I’m still a little buzzed from my trip to the library this weekend. I decided to have my son join because I finally got the Kindle I’ve been lusting after for ages. I won one in a competition, but let’s say it still hasn’t turned up since February.

Since I got my clammy nibs on the Kindle, I’ve bought a couple of novels for my son, which he read in a jiffy. Now, he’s asking about the next story in the Priscilla the Great series, which isn’t out yet. Seeing as how this kindle-book-buying thing can get expensive on a small island pocket, I decided on the visit to the library. The array of children’s books wasn’t impressive, but they do have stuff that will keep him occupied for a bit.
