William Knibb, Kingston (Jamaica) & Kata

Thursday, April 12, 2012

William Knibb: was born in 1803 in Kettering, Northamptonshire. He came to Jamaica as a Baptist missionary and based on what he saw, was determined to ‘slay the monster’ of slavery, which proved a challenge as missionaries depended on the benevolence of the plantation owners. Knibbs was jailed for ‘inciting a rebellion’, threatened with tar and feathers and had his church and classrooms burned to the ground. He was exonerated of all the charges brought against him.

Snapshots of Kingston, Jamaica

Sharing more scenes from Kingston & St. Andrew. Enjoy your visit to the other side of Jamaica and have a great weekend!

St. William Grant Park - Downtown, Kingston
Coronation Market - Downtown, Kingston. Most Jamaicans say 'Curry-Nation Market'. Yep, taking illegal verbal shortcuts is a national pastime.
Market hazards - See the guy on the right with the shopping cart?  It's possible to get a foot run over by one of these (or a hand cart) if you're not careful. Nimbleness is necessary for market trips.  In case you're wondering, a handcart is a 4 wheeled contraption that kinda looks like a raft with a steering wheel attached. I'll capture an image on my next market visit.

Abandoned Courthouse in Half-Way-Tree.

It took an entire week for the other set to come in (see last week's picture), but the young vamp is now fang-complete. I could show you what he looks like after a 'bloody' meal, but then I'd have to stake him for wasting good Ketchup.
