Bad Guys, Family & A Sweet Romance

Knight of Penn Quarter (Knights of the Castle #9)Knight of Penn Quarter by Terri Ann Johnson
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Mateo is jaded and on his way out of the FBI when he lands a date with Rachel, a social worker. One of her cases goes haywire, and she becomes a target. Of course, Mateo won’t leave her to deal with the bad guys alone.

I enjoyed the action scenes in this story, but more than that, the connection between Mateo and Rachel was solid. Heaven was a good addition to the story and their relationship. Loved the funny moments and the hero’s protective nature. Seeing the Kings was also a treat. :)

Valentine Specials

Sunday, February 4, 2018

I've got a Valentine special going on for a limited time. 💕👩‍❤️‍👨💕💘💞 The excerpt below is from Cupid's Gift, which tells the story of a divorced father and a single mom who is content living her life the way it is, until Bryce and his dog crash into her life.

The man standing in the doorway was perfect, except for the diamond stud in his ear. Then the wind chimes jangled, and a roar shuddered through my body. I spun in the chair, one hand pressed to my chest.

A wheat-colored monster tore into the clinic, past the man holding the door open. If that thing didn't cut its speed, it would either run straight into the desk or jump over it and topple me to the floor. I got ready to bolt out of the seat, if necessary, but the man stopped the giant torpedo with one command. "Maddox, sit."

The idiot dog stopped short of the desk and sat on his haunches, panting so loudly it was impossible not to hear him from where I sat. "Sorry about that."

The man walked into the reception area to stand beside the dog. "Maddox gets a little excited when he's away from home."

"That's what you call it?" I said, clutching the thong at my neck. "I thought he was going to lay me out flat on the floor."

The stranger smiled, forcing me to pull in a sharp breath. He was mega-gorgeous. Bitter-chocolate dark with a set of teeth so even, I thought they might be dentures. Tall and slender. Not drop-dead handsome, but delicious eye-candy. Perfect, I thought again, minus the earring.

He caught me looking at the diamond glinting in his earlobe and one of his eyebrows did a little lift, as if he were asking what part of my business it was. Ignoring what his expression conveyed, I put on my professional face and let go of the death grip I now had on the pendant I wore. "Can I help you?"

"It's okay, Melanie." Matthias, my boss, walked past me and gripped the man by the hand. "Bryce. Good thing you called because I was gonna leave ten minutes ago."

I wondered about that since the switchboard had been silent for the last hour, which meant Bryce had to be a close friend or associate. He'd probably called Matthias on his cellular.

They did a weird grip that started with a regular handshake and ended with clapping each other on the back. It was all I could do not to roll my eyes.

As I had many times before, I wondered if my boss had lost his mind, but Matthias had so many sides to him, it was impossible to keep track of whatever he was up to at any point in time. The two of them continued talking and I got busy with the appointment schedule onscreen, trying not to listen to their conversation.

It was clear they were at ease with each other, and I wondered about the identity of Matthias' visitor. He reminded me of someone, but I wasn't sure who. I searched my mind. Had we met before?

If we had, it was probably in passing, since I would have taken note of a man wearing an earring if I'd met him before. This one was interesting enough for me to remember him from a previous meeting. Still, I was almost sure this wasn't the first time I'd seen him.

"This boy needs some attention," Matthias said, bending to scratch the dog at the back of his neck. I hoped the disgust on my face wasn't obvious as I glanced at Matthias.

The dog's coat was matted in places, an indication that it was in need of a good brushing. That thought made me glance at Bryce. If he couldn't take care of his dog ...

He caught me looking at him, and the pleasant expression slid from his face, leaving one I couldn't read.

I wanted to squirm in my seat, but forced myself to stare at the screen before me. So I was guilty of judging, but given the condition of the dog, I could be forgiven for thinking this man looked good, but only knew how to take care of himself.

His polo shirt and jeans were crisp and clean and the hint of musk wafting toward me said he also smelled good. While I inhaled his scent, I reminded myself the condition of his dog was none of my business. The phone rang and I grabbed the handset, grateful for the distraction.

About Blindsided ...

Sunday, January 14, 2018

So, my newest baby has been out for a week. The reviews have been good so far and Sunday is as good a day as any to share a sample of this sweet romance.

The wait was over and tonight he'd have Caroline with him, where she belonged. All she had to say was I do, since he'd already pledged his love for her.

After the reception and an hour's drive to Negril, they'd enjoy each other for the next two weeks.

Caroline's hand twitched in his, bringing him back to the elaborate stage his mother had created for their wedding.

Clouds of chiffon, and clusters of flowers he couldn't identify, jostled for space.

The white and gold theme was dazzling and a bit much, but not according to Caroline and his mother. Only Caroline's brilliant bouquet was out of sync with their color scheme.

He was glad they agreed to have the wedding outdoors. All of this fanciness inside a building would have driven him crazy. The ceremony returned front and center when the pastor asked, "Do you take this man, Gordon Raimes, to be your lawfully wedded husband?"

When he looked at Caroline, her mouth was half open, her nostrils vibrated, and her eyes were glossy with tears.

He squeezed her hand and cocked his head, acutely aware of the chill rolling up his spine.

Something was wrong. He'd felt it for at least a week, but had been too busy wrapping up several deals to ensure he'd be fully relaxed on their honeymoon. He should have been paying more attention to what was now obvious.

Caroline swallowed and the delicate hollow at the base of her neck moved with each breath she took. Then she said, "I'm sorry, Gordon. I can't marry you."

Blindsided is on Kindle Unlimited. You can purchase a copy at lrd.to/Blindsided.

Blindsided is Coming!

Wednesday, December 27, 2017

Blindsided is a sweet romance that I've been holding on to since early this year. It's scheduled to be released soon ...

Something was wrong. He'd felt it for at least a week, but had been too busy wrapping up several deals to pay attention to what was now obvious.

Caroline swallowed and the delicate hollow at the base of her neck moved with each breath she took. "I'm sorry, Gordon. I can't marry you."

Her voice came at him as if from the far end of a corridor, and he was sure he’d heard wrong. "What?"

"The, uh, the time isn't right."

Her words body slammed him. He licked his lip, which seemed to take an awful long time. His jacket itched and he let out his breath, conscious of the guests shuffling behind them.

Next to him, his younger brother, Carsten, moved as if to step forward, but only laid a hand on his shoulder. Behind Caroline, her matron of honor's wide-eyed gaze swung between them.

For a few seconds, Gordon's gaze rested on Charles, Sr., Caroline's father, who seemed about to lose his breakfast.

Gordon spread his feet and pulled his shoulders back. "And this is the time you choose to tell me?"

Caroline made a weird sound in her throat and lowered her gaze, pulling out of his grip to swipe her nose with the back of her hand, which was covered with a lace half-glove. Her action reminded him of something a little girl would do, but she wasn't a child. Caroline was a grown woman who seemed to have lost her mind in the last few minutes.

"I didn't know how to tell you," she whispered as tears leaked from the corner of one eye.

He wanted to pull her to his chest and shield her from whatever was wrong, because clearly she was hurting. But first, there was the business of their wedding. His mother had been planning this affair for the last six months, and had to be wondering what was going on.

From the corners of his eyes, he watched his mother rise. Then his father followed. They had always been a unit, or tag-team as their children called them, and supportive of their family. His sister, Janelle, frowned and then leaned toward her son, who spoke in her ear.

Gordon knew he was avoiding the issue in front of him by letting his mind wander. His gaze returned to Caroline, who gripped her bottom lip with her teeth. Her eye makeup was applied with a light hand. The purple lipstick was almost perfect, except where she'd gnawed it away, but her eyeliner was running and she looked as if she was about to faint.
Instead, she collapsed against him, sobbing.

He held her close, fighting the sensation of someone crushing his chest in a vise. Over Caroline's head, he threw a desperate glance at Feechi—his brother’s wife and Caroline’s matron of honor.

Ingrid, Caroline's bridesmaid, stood stock-still, her eyes pulled wide.

Feechi stood directly behind Caroline at the same time his mother reached them. Taking Caroline by the shoulders, Mom turned her. "Come with me. Let's get to the bottom of this."

Shaking her head, Caroline said, "You can't."

As Gordon watched, his bride took off down the aisle, clutching the sides of her ivory dress as she ran.

Excerpt:

Jack noticed the fur on Phil’s back stand on end and then it came, the low growl and bared teeth he’d expected. Though Phil would never bite, those who didn’t know her were sure to be petrified by this display.

Denise was no exception. She backed up, plastering herself against the now closed front door. “Is he going to attack me?”

Jack stood between Phil and his date and tried not to smile. “She. Phil’s female.”

Denise just failed what Jack liked to call “The Phil Test” as so many other women had before her.

“She won’t bite. She just doesn’t like you,” Jack said, then turned to Phil, pulling her by the collar a few feet down the entranceway hall. “Go on now. Go to bed, Phil.” He pointed the way, but the dog didn’t move. Her eyes were trained on Denise. She lifted her head and smelled the air, her fur still at attention. Then the dog sneezed and shook her head.

“I don’t think she likes your perfume,” Jack said. “Think we’d better call it a night. This isn’t going to work out.” He opened the door and without a word, Denise fled, fishing her car keys out of her purse as she made her way down his walkway.

Denise was the sixth woman this month alone Phil had sent packing. Jack flipped on the outside light and watched as she got in her car and hoped she wouldn’t drive too fast and end up nose first in one of the dips along the laneway. Once she was out of sight, he locked the door, made his way to the living room, and plopped into his easy chair beside Phil’s bed. Phil turned in a circle and plopped into her own spot, nudging the duvet until it covered her.

Excerpt:

Mateo was on his knees and the cat was beside him, allowing him to stroke her. She looked tired and thin.

“Oh you poor baby,” Willow said, kneeling beside Mateo and putting the two containers down in front of the cat.

The cat went for the water first, lapping it up with her eyes on Mateo and Willow and her ears back, twitching as she listened to her babies.

After the water, Mateo and Willow silently watched as she gobbled up the tuna, eating every last flake of fish and licking her lips when she finished.

Willow went to stroke her, but the cat hissed at her and flattened her ears, pointing them backwards before going back to her kittens, with a sharp flick of her tail.

“We can’t leave her out here.” Mateo said, looking around.

“What are we going to do? We can’t touch her kittens and move them.” Willow said, at least knowing that much about cats. “The cat must belong to someone Mateo,” Willow said. “She’s obviously used to humans and being handled, but it is getting colder at night now.”

Mateo nodded and standing, helped Willow to her feet.

The poor cat, he’d been surprised when the cat had let him touch her. Just then, she walked out of the undergrowth again and went to the house. She pawed the wooden door and meowed forlornly.
From the scratches on the panel it looked as though she had been doing that for weeks, if not months.

“When did these people move out?” he asked tightly, feeling his temper rise.

“I think Wendy said two months ago or something like that.” Willow answered, coming to the same realisation as Mateo by the looks of it. She had never seen him look so furious.

Mateo swore and took out his phone.

Excerpt:

As a wide receiver, my hands hurt all season long. I got regular massages, but nothing like this little lady with her strong little hands.

"Oh." I moaned.

"I know right," Preston said. "So man, how you doing?"

"I'm good." I felt a little bit of tension easing back in. I hated these types of conversations.
The little Chinese lady grunted as she worked hard to push it back down.

"Why?" I looked over at Preston.

"Nothing. I'm just checking in. You seemed a little wound up." He looked over and leaned back. "Maybe it's LA. It puts people on edge. Except for your little Callie. That girl is sunshine man."

I grinned at the way he said her name and the description he used. She was the brightest part of my life.
"I'm lucky."

"No man. It's not luck. There's nothing lucky about love man." Preston leaned over. "It's work. Don't leave the fate of the two of you to dumb luck, it will let you down."

"Why are you waxing so poetic with me? I know you."

"You're right. You know me." Preston leaned back. "You know what I've done and why being where I am right now is nothing short of a miracle. I'll give the credit to God, Nietzsche, Confucius, and whatever high power I know. Not for bringing Kate into my life, for giving me the knowledge and the lessons of my past to hold on to her and make her my future."

"Yeah, Yeah." I said and closed my eyes as the little Chinese lady went to work on my feet.

"All I'm saying is she loves you and you love her. Don't screw it up."

"Some things are out of my control."

Love on Trial - P.C. Zick #VPK2

Thursday, January 26, 2017

Cupid worked overtime to deliver this Valentine's Day treat. Cuddle up with a heartwarming collection of dog tales, kitty and horse stories, and true love with these all-new sweet romances penned by USA Today and international bestselling authors. On January 31, the Valentine Pets & Kisses 2 boxed set will be released. In the meantime, feel free to pre-order since it's only $0.99.

Today, I'll be sharing a sample from Love on Trial, as well as a Dear Cupid letter. Enjoy!

Excerpt:
OF ALL DAYS, CLYDE CHOSE this one to break away from his leash and run away during his morning walk. Jude Crandall needed to be in court in less than two hours, and instead of showering and looking over her notes once more for her opening statement, she was standing in the dog park calling for her Boston terrier.

He must have seen a squirrel and that made him go crazy. Jude’s mind swirled with thoughts of bringing justice for the Simpson family, and she lost track of holding tight to the leash. Now she’d be late and ran the risk of blowing the biggest day so far of the trial.

And wouldn’t Malik Moore just love that? She could picture him sitting at the table across the aisle, with a smirk partially hidden by his hands that formed a tent over his mouth. His smooth dark skin glowing under the collar of his white starched shirt, he’d probably make some remark about how nice it was for her to show up. It galled her to think she might blow the case from day one simply because she couldn’t keep Clyde under control.

Relief flooded her when she saw her dog racing toward her on his short legs. His tongue dangled out the side of his mouth. He yapped and jumped in the air when he came closer to her.

“If you think I’m giving you a treat for that stunt, you’re absolutely wrong.” She reached in her pocket and pulled out a small biscuit. “I’m giving you this treat because you came back.”

“Talking to your dog now?” The voice came from behind her, and she swirled around to face her accuser.

It was exactly who she suspected of sneaking up on her and eavesdropping. Her courtroom nemesis, Malik.

“What are you doing here?” She wanted to run with Clyde back to her apartment, but then she relaxed. If Malik was here, then they’d both be late.

“Walking Suzanne.” He pointed down to the puppy, a Jack Russell terrier, sitting obediently at his feet while Clyde jumped and yapped around Suzanne until his leash was wound around Jude’s legs. “I need to get going, though. Don’t want to be late on the first day of the trial. I might miss the prosecution’s opening arguments.”

Clyde lay down next to Suzanne and tilted his head sideways. She turned her head away.

“Your dog is a bit of a snob.” Jude scratched Clyde’s head to help him through the sting of rejection. “Maybe it’s true what they say.”

“And what would that be?” Malik asked

“That dogs take on the personalities of their owners.”

“Person. I’m her person, not her owner. And neither one of us is a snob.” Malik leaned down and picked up Suzanne. Clyde jumped up and yapped. “See you in court. My client is ready for this to be over.”

Excerpt:

Liam's fists clenched under the table.

"There was also an art heist that same night. My sister-in-law took some heat as a false suspect."

Victor would have no qualms about framing his sister-in-law, Kate. He'd also have no hesitation if Sherry ended up in front of the bullet intended for him. He continued reading and then saw an image of the diamond ring. Numbness grew inside him.

"When did they get engaged?"

Nebraska pulled up a picture on his computer of New Year's Eve. Liam stared at the star-studded picture of Sherry right next to celebrities and the ball in Times Square. Victor was down on one knee.

"At midnight. The same night the Federal Reserve lost four hundred million dollars out of various accounts."

"Crimes and romance don't normally mix." Liam closed his eyes. Sherry couldn't be involved. "She would have no knowledge of any thefts."

Nebraska's chair squeaked as he turned toward his file cabinet. Picking up his water glass, he stared at it like he just found an old friend.

"We have every reason to suspect both of them."

Liam's collar was tight. Sherry was a good girl and would never be involved with crime or Victor. She worked in a library and last visit he'd spotted her in the donut shop selling donuts behind the counter, covering for her friend Angela.

He stammered a bit. "B-but, four hundred million is not a lot of money to steal from the Fed.
If you have access, they have so much more."

"We all don't have your trust fund, Collins." Nebraska sipped his water. "I'll send the case file to your tablet. Read it on the plane."

Liam's heart beat a mile a minute. "I'll prove her innocent."
